When I turn on the heater or A/C, I smell mold or dust

Cars must have the dust and pollen (or cabin) filter replaced every season. If you have never replaced it in years, then the filter will be in a horrible condition. If you do regular maintenance, then vacuuming it out may be sufficient.

Some cars have the filter in the engine compartment, but most have it behind the glove box door.
