Car A/C cycling on and off -- how to fix

Although A/C troubleshooting is best left to good technicians, but they charge so much that you (if you are good at being a handyman, of course) might want to troubleshoot yourself.

So the first thing you will need is a filling hose with pressure indicator. Make sure the pressure is somewhere in the green range when the compressor operates (it will be much higher with the compressor off).

If the pressure is OK, then inspect the belt. Does it make a whining noise? It may be too loose or worn out, or the compressor is stalling.

If the compressor and the A/C radiator fans cycle on and off every few seconds, then usually the compressor latch is failing, or car/outside temperature sensor is not giving proper readings. For example, if the engine coolant sensor is not working properly, car computer may think the engine is overheating, and it will turn the A/C off.
