Why the hell is my DVD drive spinning so loud?

I don't know what idiot made the drive constantly spinning at 52X when playing a DVD movie (when 1X is sufficient). At this speed, the drive will vibrate a lot, and heat up the DVD. One program that can prevent this idiocy, although not free, is Nero DriveSpeed (part of their burning suite). Free programs doing the same can probably be found as well. Set the speed to 4X and you'll enjoy the movie without the idiotic computer make a huge amount of noise.
