How to wire an Ethernet cable

There are several wiring "standards" for Ethernet cables.

The following wiring cable color table is for a standard, non-crossover, category 10/100 cable. Unless the other end of the wire is different, wire a replacement this way:

Ethernet proper wiring for non-crossover wire:

Orange / White

Orange

Green / White

Blue

Blue / White

Green

Brown / White

Brown

 

Strip 1/2" of outer insulation for a standard press-in jack.

Note: a crimper / crimping tool is required to replace an Ethernet jack. RadioShack has the following tools available:
