1TB+ external hard drives

The two retail choices in the 1TB+ external HD choices are the Western Digital MyBook series and the Seagate FreeAgent Desk.

I would like to share my experience. I have dealt with perhaps a hundred hard drives already.

Western Digital: MyBook, especially the new edition has great included software. But more than that, I almost never had a problem with the MyBook drives. I almost never had any problem with WD hard drives in general, especially internal ones.

Seagate: Had an extremely dangerous number of problems. With retail external hard drives clicking or starting to click later after some use.

I had internal hard drives crash.

There was a recent story that cannot be retold in a few words, with firmware problems which had users suddenly and (because the company did not do anything) irreversibly losing their hard drive. Not even due to a fixable hardware issue.

Seagate is too big and too far to care about solving your problems here in US.

Do not buy Seagate drives of any kind - internal or external.

Also, in general, do not buy any used hard drives at all. The cost of your data greatly exceeds the cost of a new hard drive. Never gamble by trying to save money.

Note: I don't know about your area, but Wal-Mart seems to have stocking issues with the MyBook. Consider using the site to store option to order your hard drive.

Also, don't try to save money by buying a small-capacity hard drive. Buy as large as you can because let me tell you, it's going to be filled up. Very soon.
