Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket

"ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)"

Explanation: Host name was not specified.

Host name must be specified for a database which does not reside on the same server as Apache (localhost). It is specified like so:

otheroptions -h hostname otheroptions

or

otheroptions -h=hostname otheroptions
