Hard Drive freezes computer, cannot access hard drive

Symptomology:

In Windows Vista or 7, a hard drive freezes your computer if connected internally thru SATA. Or, access is denied if a hard drive is connected thru an external enclosure. When right-clicking the drive the pie chart is all blue.

Firstly, try right-click Computer>Manage. If see files and can run chkdsk, then its a permission or ownership issue. If no results after setting that, or "cannot display owner", then connect hd to a windows xp computer, copy files to another external hd. Then might still have computer freeze when viewing the copied files. Can then use "take ownership". Takes 15 minutes for 6GB, longer for more data. The files can then be transferred to a vista/7 internal or external hd. If you are sure all files have been copied (copy user profile and folder), then hd should be long-formatted.
