Gadwin PrintScreen
Gadwin PrintScreen is a good example of a (free) utility that just works: press the Print Screen keyboard key, and the screen shot (or program shot, if set up that way) is saved as a file without asking any questions.
A few options that can make it even better:
1) Hot key: PrintScreen
2) Do not preview the captured image
3) Do not show splash on startup
4) If you select anything other than full screen as the source and turn preview off, then results may be unpredictable. For example, instead of capturing just the popup dialog box, it might capture just a small button. This is due to the way software is programmed, not Gadwin's fault.
5) Destination: set only to copy captured area to file (with png extension). Under automatic naming, set it to ScreenShot %m-%d-%y, a neat trick that I thought of myself. This will prevent the sequentially filenames conflicting with each other if you move them around often from the original directory (I have thousands).
By the way, if you did not use my trick with dating files, and are stuck with several folders of files that have repeating filenames, you can use a batch rename utility like Métamorphose to rename files with appended dates.
