Scanners Drivers and Software

This article cites HP ScanJet 4670 as an example, but this applies equally to all HP and all other scanners.

The problem is that installing all software that came on the CD is not a very good idea. Besides the CD bundling HP Director and HP Image Zone, and the default "driver" download file being 220MB, the software did not even run on my computer.

If this happens to your scanner, look on the website for TWAIN driver. For this scanner, it is hard to find on the bottom of the page. It is called hp ScanJet 4600 series alternative TWAIN drivers for Windows" which is only 12MB.

Now, go into any image editing application (Paint.Net, GIMP, etc), and select one of the options of the "File" menu to get the image from the scanner.

Auto straightening: by accident I found out that ONE OF THREE INTERFACES PROVIDED by HP actually has an "automatically straighten" option buried in settings. Now, I can also easily crop the image by using (mostly) automatic dark-border detection. GIMP has a deskew download as well. But since both options are not that great, I recommend that you also just try to manually rotate the image until it looks good.

Symptoms: Director does not work (program does not launch and nothing is displayed/launched on screen). The problem is actually known to HP and some "solutions" are documented. Nevertheless, they do not post an updated version of Director, nor the update/patch for it can be found online.

Look for TWAIN drivers for your scanner, or read online support information relating TWAIN/SANE support on your scanner.
